Since moving to Boston with my family I have learned many a thing. Coming from the city of London my family and I were wealthy and did not know how to fend. Living in Boston we have learned how to fend for ourselves and have learned new and valuable skills. I have formed a group of close knit friends from the church that I hope will be lifelong. Though I have learned much from just living here I have learned the most from Hester. Hester taught me that being strong and persevering is the best way to deal with hard times. Even when she is punished for her crime of adultery and publicly humiliated by being forced to wear a scarlet A on her chest, Hester does not break. Hester may have committed sin but she is a good person. She is strong and proud but also humble. Although many gossips would like to say she is without shame, I disagree. She is beautiful but she punishes herself by wearing a hat to cover it. Hester is also kind. Since she is shunned by the rest of the community, she has no friends, and apart form raising her daughter, she has no obligations, either. She spends her time in solitude or giving help to those who need it, such as the poor or the Governor, who she sits next to as he dies. The people she helps do not show the same generosity to her in return. When her behavior is found out and results in a child, Hester accepts both her punishment and the child that God gave her. She refuses to give up her daughter, Pearl. She claims that God gave Pearl to her to raise. That was the right thing to do. Although I don't agree with Hester's adultery she is somehow a role model. The people of this community should realize that.
This whole experience teaches another very important lesson, that actions have consequences. Its a very important lesson. Hester makes the decision to have sex while she is married and this results in a child and punishment. Dimmesdale keeps a secret and it in turn tortures him pretty much to death. Dimmesdale is the epitome of a hypocrite, not a label people should want. He is a minister who is also an adulterer. In his role as pastor, he should be above reproach and his parishioners assume him to be so even though he is a sinner.
I hope that my descendants living in Boston can continue to live prosperously and to be good humans.
